Why the iPhone shows winmail.dat

Outlook sometimes sends emails in Rich Text format. Then it packs the attachments into one file called winmail.dat. The iPhone Mail app cannot unpack it. Gmail, GMX and Yahoo on the iPhone cannot either.

How to open winmail.dat on iPhone

  1. In Mail, touch and hold the winmail.dat attachment.
  2. Select “Save to Files” and choose a folder.
  3. Open this page in Safari.
  4. Tap “Select file”, then “Browse”, and choose winmail.dat.
  5. Tap “Save” next to an attachment. It goes to Files → Downloads.

Ask the sender to stop winmail.dat

The sender can switch Outlook to HTML format. Then the attachments arrive as normal files. The steps are on the winmail.dat page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. You need no account and no sign-up. There is no limit on the number or size of files.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the file on your device. Our server never sees it. You can check this: load the page, switch off the internet, then open the file. It still works.

Do I need an app?

No. Safari is enough. The page works on iPhone and iPad with a current iOS.

Where are the saved attachments?

In the Files app, folder “Downloads”. Safari saves files there.

Does it work for .msg files too?

Yes. Save the .msg attachment to Files and select it the same way.
