What an .eml file is

An .eml file is one email in the standard internet format. Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Gmail, Outlook.com and most other services can save emails as .eml. Forwarded emails often arrive as .eml attachments.

How to open an .eml file

  1. Drop the .eml file on the letter slot above, or select “Select file”.
  2. Read the email on the page.
  3. Select “Save” next to an attachment, or download all of them as one ZIP.

Open .eml on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

  • Windows: Outlook and Thunderbird open .eml files. Without them, open the file here in Edge or Chrome.
  • Mac: Apple Mail opens .eml with a double-click and adds nothing to your mailbox. On this page you also see the attachments as a list.
  • iPhone and iPad: Save the .eml file to Files. Open this page in Safari and select the file.
  • Android: Download the file. Open this page in Chrome and select it in “Downloads”.

If the .eml file does not open

  • You see only code. A text editor opened the file. Drop it on this page instead.
  • The file ends in .emlx. That is a file from the mail folder of Apple Mail. Open it in Apple Mail, then save the email as .eml.
  • The attachment is called winmail.dat. Open it on the winmail.dat page.

Why does my computer not open the .eml file?

An .eml file needs a mail program like Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird. Without one, Windows and phones often show only code. This page shows the email as it was sent.

Can I convert .eml to PDF?

Yes. Open the file and select “Print or save as PDF”. In the print window choose “Save as PDF”.

The email contains another email. What happens?

Attached emails are opened too. They appear below the first email with their own attachments.
